The tenth annual #OitaATX Japan Summer Festival is scheduled for Saturday, September 20, from 12 to 6 pm at the Long Center, located at 701 W. Riverside Drive, Austin, TX 78704. Doors open at 11:45 am. The Austin-Oita Sister City Committee (AOSCC) hosts the event to celebrate Austin’s Japanese Sister City, Oita.
This family-friendly festival features Japanese food and drink, kids’ activities, cultural exhibits, and more. Attendees can enjoy a performance by a Bamboo Boys bluegrass musician from Oita with local Austin collaborators, along with JPOP, Japanese drumming, traditional dancing, sumo, martial arts, kendo, jyuku, kyudo, a tea ceremony, kimono dressing, a seminar on doing business in Japan, a talk on Japanese gardening, and an artisan and festival marketplace. Several performers will be visiting from our sister city, Oita, Japan.
The mission of AOSCC is to promote greater public interest in and appreciation of the culture, people, language, business, and products shared between the City of Austin and Oita, Japan. Oita has been one of Austin’s 14 Sister Cities since 1990. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the partnership.
This is a venue rental event presented by an independent organization separate from the Long Center. Any views or opinions expressed in this event or by the event organizers do not necessarily reflect the views, positions, or values of the Long Center.
