Celebrate America’s beauty with compositions written by American composers, inspired by the sights and sounds of the place we call home. Copland’s The Heiress Suite, created from the Oscar winning score to The Heiress film, opens the evening program. Pianist John Novacek first joins the Symphony for Gould’s Interplay, and after intermission, for Gershwin’s famous Rhapsody in Blue, which combines jazz rhythms with classical elements. Putting nature’s beauty into song is the Grand Canyon Suite by Grofé, the conclusion to just some of the breathtaking landscapes we get to experience.

MORTON GOULD – Interplay
GEORGE GERSHWIN – Rhapsody in Blue
FERDE GROFÉ – Grand Canyon Suite

SHOW SUMMARY
Black Violin is led by classically trained string players Wil B. (viola) and Kev Marcus (violin). Joining them onstage are DJ SPS and drummer Nat Stokes. The band uses their unique blend of classical and hip-hop music, often described as “classical boom,” to overcome stereotypes and encourage people of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds to join together to break down cultural barriers.
Black Violin spent the last year writing and recording their latest studio album Take the Stairs which features singles, “Showoff” and “One Step” and was released on November 1, 2019. Their last record, Stereotypes, debuted at #1 on the Billboard Classical Crossover Chart and #4 on the Billboard R&B Chart. NPR praised the album and band, saying “their music will keep classical music alive for the next generation.” Some of their creative collaborations include Kanye West, Wu-Tang Clan, Wyclef Jean, Lil Wayne, and Alicia Keys.
The group advocates for educational outreach and in the past 12 months have performed for over 100,000 students in the US and Europe. Black Violin’s Impossible Tour will spread the message that anything is possible and there are no limits to what one can achieve, regardless of circumstance.
- All patrons, regardless of age, require a ticket to attend the performance.

You’ve loved him for over 20 years as the creator of the fantastic NPR radio show and podcast, Radiolab, and now you can see Jad Abumrad Live at the Long Center!
Radiolab is a public radio program broadcast on nearly 600 stations across the nation and downloaded more than 12 million times a month as a podcast.
Abumrad employs his dual backgrounds as composer and journalist to create what’s been called “a new aesthetic” in broadcast journalism. He orchestrates dialogue, music, interviews and sounds into compelling documentaries that draw listeners into investigations of otherwise intimidating topics, such as the nature of numbers, the evolution of altruism, or the legal foundation for the war on terror.
