Austin’s own Tony Awards
For the past 7 years, the program has evaluated school musicals in 15 categories, presenting the nominees at a March event and concluding with a Tony-Award style red carpet ceremony in April. Interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 HAYA ceremony creatively pivoted to a virtual show, still highlighting the hard work of Austin’s schools, educators, and students.
WHAT’S NEW THIS YEAR?
For the 2020-21 school year, the entire program has been revamped! With differing levels of ability and capacity to produce musicals safely across the Greater Austin area, the usual competition between schools has been eliminated this year as we celebrate, honor, and support whatever schools are able to present. Instead, schools can participate by producing anything that combines song, dance, and storytelling! Also new is a student competition created specifically for this year, which will allow students to work independently or as a virtual team to create content in various categories, proudly representing their school programs.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
- All public and private, and accredited charter high schools in Travis, Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet, Caldwell, Hays, and Williamson Counties.
- Schools must produce something related to Musical Theatre with their students and submit 1-5 minutes of video content.
- There is no cost to participate in the program.
