The Long Center is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit dedicated to broadening the appreciation and enhancing the enjoyment of the cultural arts.
The Long Center presents A Texas-Sized Evening of Art, Music, and Poetry featuring Up Around the Sun with Tim Kerr & Jerry Hagins, plus music and poetry from “Alaska’s Fiddling Poet” Ken Waldman, Saturday, August 18 in Rollins Studio Theatre.
Get ready for an event unlike anything ever seen in Austin! Visual artist and Texas Music Hall of Fame inductee Tim Kerr and his Up Around the Sun band mate Jerry Hagins will be joined by “Alaska’s Fiddling Poet” Ken Waldman for a Texas-sized evening of roots music, poetry, and art. Come experience the old-time music of clawhammer banjo, open tuned guitar, and harmonica—plus Appalachia-style fiddle, visual art, and poetry (from Waldman’s forthcoming book). With so much talent and creativity in the room how could it be anything less than legendary? Expect memorable performances, inspirational art, and a night Austin won’t soon forget.
Visual artist and musician Tim Kerr originates from Lake Jackson, but moved to Austin as soon as he could. His art has been shown all over the country as well as Europe, Asia, and Australia. A 1996 inductee into the Texas Music Hall of Fame, he eschews labels and celebrates a creative life.
Except for a sojourn in Philadelphia, Jerry Hagins has also lived his whole life in Texas. A musician well-versed with the banjo, fiddle, and guitar, he plays in several Austin bands, co-edits a literary journal, and has the gift of making everyone fortunate enough to play with him sound better.
Ken Waldman is a renowned fiddler and poet, recording 9 albums-worth of music and publishing 10 books. Since 1995 he’s toured throughout North America, often as Alaska’s Fiddling Poet. His 11th book, Trump Sonnets, Volume 3, is due out in January 2019, and rumor has it the book will be on hand as he returns to The Live Music Capital of the World.
