“The nuns taught us there are two ways through life: the way of nature, and the way of grace. You have to choose which one you’ll follow.”

With these words—the first we hear spoken by the character of Mrs. O’Brien (Jessica Chastain) in Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life—the film quietly lays out the conflict and structure of the story to follow, which takes us as far back as the Big Bang, and into a vision of the afterlife. Just as Malick’s earlier films take the form of an irremediable confrontation—think Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line—the moral conflict in The Tree of Life is between the binaries of nature and grace. Manifested in the film by Mrs. O’Brien and Mr. O’Brien (Brad Pitt), nature and grace are major themes explored at every twist and turn of young Jack’s childhood in a small Texas town, experienced as recollected memories of Sean Penn’s adult Jack, wrestling with the death of a brother years later.

As in all of Malick’s films, music plays a most important role in The Tree of Life. From the first movement of Mahler’s first symphony to Smetana’s playful but grand Die Moldau, representing love of life as the three O’Brien boys and their mother play in the magic hour of their neighborhood, this film is packed with major compositions by music’s greatest composers like Berlioz, Brahms, Mozart and more. Brought to life by the Austin Symphony Orchestra, this is the full-bodied orchestral experience that The Tree of Life always deserved.
