Sky Candy presents Swings Asunder, June 20- July 4, 2014 in the Rollins Studio Theatre.

Sky Candy proudly presents the world premier of Swings Asunder, directed by world-travelled dancer and choreographer Nathan Brumbaugh.

Swings Asunder is an avant-garde exploration of gender roles, sex, and self worth through modern dance, gesture, and innovative aerial movement. It examines gender duality versus fluidity, and how we struggle to fit the molds of masculinity and femininity through life’s rites of passage. Come along on a unique journey toward self-acceptance and ultimately, the power of breaking free to live our own unique truth, discovering our own vulnerability and courage along the way.

A man cracks raw eggs and drinks them whole… Four women are contained by a metal cube, shifting within its bounds as it lifts into the air… Two men posture like peacocks as a herd of turtle-women drift nearby… Swings Asunder draws from the lyricism of modern dance movement as well as the stylized, precise movements of gesture to create a world where gender roles shift fluidly within the same body and blow up to extreme proportions. Identities develop, die, and are reborn anew. Perspectives shift through the courage of self exploration. Eight of Austin’s most talented aerialists, acrobats and dancers will take to the stage and the air accompanied by an original score by local Austin composer Justin Sherburn, on a breathtaking set by Ia Enstera, to explore through movement the complex, often problematic, but always hopeful world of identity in which we live.
