The Long Center, ZACH Theatre, and the University of Texas at Austin College of Fine Arts present the 5th Annual Greater Austin High School Musical Theatre Awards, hosted by Tyler Mount, Wednesday, April 18 in Dell Hall.
Imagine Austin’s version of the Tony Awards. Every year, the Long Center brings together over 30 schools from our community to shine the spotlight on the hard work of thousands of students and teachers involved in arts education. Join us for a spectacular evening marking the fifth anniversary of this program where 38 area high schools and over 2000 participating students will gather for an evening of live performances, awards, scholarships, special guests, and more.
We’re proud to announce that this year’s ceremony will be hosted by Tyler Mount, Broadway’s most noted social influencer and creator of Playbill’s “The Tyler Mount Vlog.” A graduate of St. Edward’s University and alumnus of Summer Stock Austin, Mount spent many of his formative years active in Austin’s arts community. His Broadway credits include: Once On This Island (Producer), On Your Feet: The Story of Emilio & Gloria Estefan, An American In Paris, Viva Broadway: Gloria Estefan LIVE!, and The Cradle Will Rock starring Patti LuPone.
Performances include fully executed numbers from the 8 schools nominated for Best Musical, lead actor and actress medleys showcasing the top 9 students in each category, an opening number performed by the Long Center Select Ensemble and introducing the individual nominees, a musical theatre tribute medley by the Long Center Select Ensemble, and a finale like nothing you’ve ever seen where two students from each of the 38 participating schools come together in an exciting song and dance extravaganza to top off the evening.
Awards are given in 15 categories: Best Musical Production, Best Actor in a Leading Role, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Actor in a Supporting Role, Best Actress in a Supporting Role, Best Featured Performer, Best Musical Direction, Best Choreography, Best Orchestra, Best Direction, Best Stage Crew, Best Scenic Design, Best Costume Design, Best Lighting Design and Best Ensemble.
