Austin is a progressive community, leading the way in green building and other environmentally friendly initiatives.
The Long Center established Long Green Future to further support our commitment to a sustainable environment. During the construction of the Long Center, we recycled 95% of the resources from the old Palmer Auditorium and reinvented the building using 65% of the original materials, incorporating energy-efficient solutions in the process. We worked closely with the City of Austin’s Chief Sustainability Officer to create a purchasing policy for sustainable items. And thanks to the support of Austin Energy and other donors at all levels, we’re continually exploring how we can be better partners for Austin’s environment.
The Long Center already incorporates many energy-efficient solutions, including solar-powered exterior lighting, sensor lights in office spaces, energy efficient window films and blinds, and single stream recycling. Our online Building Management System does a remarkable job conserving energy: it controls the air and water temperatures and even has a “setback” program, which means that when an area is unoccupied, it won’t let that area get too hot (80 degrees in the summer) or too cold (40 degrees in the winter). These features help us conserve energy, water and other resources, maximize the use of recycled materials and minimize the use of toxic materials.
Also, 70% of the cleaning supplies and paper products used are green products. Every year, we also purchase energy efficient lighting for public spaces, remanufactured ink and toner cartridges and additional recycled and/or chlorine-free paper products. All of these efforts have gotten us a GOLD rating with the Austin Green Business Leader program!
Annual Fund gifts support A Long Green Future. Donor benefits start at only $125 and include advance ticket purchase opportunities, invitations to artist meet and greets and other events, recognition in our season programs and more. By supporting the Long Center and Long Green Future, you can help us toward our goal of keeping Austin’s Creative Home green. Donate now ›
