La La Land in Concert | The Long Center for the Performing Arts

Another Day of Sun — La La Land in Concert is Your Summertime Escape, June 30

It’s true — La La Land is not, in fact, leaving theaters forever.

Come this summer on June 30th, you can relive the Ryan Gosling-Emma Stone fantasy on the big screen, but this time we’ve upped the ante. Add in the Austin Symphony Orchestra playing Justin Hurwitz’s Academy Award®-winning score, and you’ve got date night magic. Ladies and gentlemen, we give you La La Land in Concert.

Winner of six Academy Awards® including Best Original Score and Best Original Song, La La Land tells the story of Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams.

Jumping from scene to scene modeled after the most recognizable of the golden-age Hollywood movie musicals–a streetlight dance, a waltz under stars over a mirrored floor–the list of homages to Los Angeles and its film industry in Director Damien Chazelle’s film are innumerable. This film put fresh energy back into the movie musical genre, with a modern spin that inspired jazz clubs across the country to transform into Sebastian’s jazz club “Seb’s” for a day and dancers on wires to skate the facades of buildings in celebration LA’s official “La La Land Day.” And with the score performed live by the Austin Symphony Orchestra as the film plays on screen, you’ve got even more movie magic.

So if you can’t experience the skyline of LA for the night, the view of Austin’s from our Terrace is a pretty good second!
