Guy Meets Girl, and the Rest is a Musical. . .Fall Slowly for ONCE This February!

What started out as a minor blip on the indie-romantic film scene, first intended to be sold to fans on DVD at star Glen Hansard’s gigs, quickly surpassed all expectations. Now a major Broadway musical and winner of 8 Tony Awards®—yes, we said 8—ONCE is, once again, blowing minds. And hearts.

Based on the 2007 film of the same name that was shot in 17 days with a non-existent budget, you probably heard about it come the 2008 Oscar season when its main song, “Falling Slowly,” surprised everyone by winning Best Original Song against others from Enchanted and August Rush.

ONCE borrows the tunes and feels of the original film—with a few additions—but in this rendition of the romantic Dublin street music scene, Guy literally meets Girl, in the form of a charming Czech immigrant, and the rest is nothing short of magic. Let us reiterate that this musical won 8 Tony Awards® in 2012, including Best Musical. BEST MUSICAL. Why? Because it breaks barriers of all kinds.

Featuring an impressive ensemble of actor-musicians who play their own instruments onstage with vigor (because everyone is something special in this musical), ONCE tells the enchanting tale of a chance connection on the streets of Dublin that causes music and life to soar to powerful new heights. Emotionally captivating and theatrically breathtaking, ONCE draws you in from the very first note and never lets go. It’s an unforgettable story about going for your dreams and the power of music to connect us all.

When the violins begin to play—and the accordion and the mandolin and the guitars and the cello—the instruments swell into a collection of distinctive voices melded into a single, universal feeling. ONCE massages that feeling until it hurts quite exquisitely.

Thanks, New York Times—we couldn’t have put that “falling slowly” feeling any better.

Landing in Austin just in time to correct that midwinter slump and still count as Valentine’s Day weekend (we’ll back you up on that one, don’t worry), ONCE is in Dell Hall for three performances, February 18 and 19. And you should consider being at one of them, or risk listening to your friends talk about it for months after (we’ll back them up on that one, too).

Why not experience an evening of “unbridled joy,” (Vogue)? Fall slowly with the rest of Austin at ONCE this February!
