Get the scoop on Summer Stock Austin’s production of Carnival, a one-of-a-kind show based on MGM’s 1953 film Lili. This musical revolves around Lili, an impressionable young girl who runs away from her past to join the enchanting life of the circus, where she is captivated by a magnificent magician and a troubled puppeteer. Carnival is a dreamlike spectacle—with singing puppets, daring feats, and a sprinkle of magic.
Directed by Scott Thompson, Carnival has attracted an impressive array of acclaimed instructors and performers to help bring the circus to life!
SILKS. James “JBird” Gibson and Jennifer Simonds join forces to train company members on aerial silks. James has traveled the world teaching and performing, most recently co-founding Circus of Hope, a transformative nonprofit that empowers youth with the confidence to learn circus arts. Jennifer is a well-respected dance and aerial arts instructor with many years of experience in choreography and production. The silks training for Summer Stock’s production of Carnival takes place at Sky Candy, a popular aerial acrobatics studio offering classes, workshops, and performances in Austin.
PUPPETS. The puppets of Carnival are custom designed and created by Connor Hopkins, founder and artistic director of Trouble Puppet Theater Company. Connor, an Emerging Artist at the National Puppetry Conference, has written and produced more than a dozen plays using puppets and teaches workshops at Salvage Vanguard Theater. Witness characters Carrot Top, Marguerite, and Reynardo come alive before your very eyes!
MAGIC. John Shaw takes a respite from the Vegas magic scene to build the illusion pieces for Carnival. He also trains the company in the execution of the illusions, one of which is the first of its kind. (You’ll have to come see for yourself—no spoilers!) John has worked as head magic specialist for the Norwegian Cruise Line and serves as Lead Magic Technician for AYALA EFX in Las Vegas. Travis Brendle, Production Supervisor for The Illusionists national tour, also helps bring the magic to the show. With these two talents working together, the magic of Carnival is sure to be unparalleled.
And that’s just the beginning! You can look forward to lira work, acrobatics, and much more! It’s clear the Carnival has the ultimate wow-factor, but it also possesses true heart in addressing real and thought-provoking human experiences.
