Here comes treble! River City Pops, Austin’s premiere show choir, is stepping into the spotlight at the Rollins Studio Theatre of The Long Center for the first time during their 32 year history performing in the Austin area. For their Long Center debut, Mixtape, RCP has put together some of their favorite tracks from yesterday and today to create a musical experience to span the generations. From the ballads of The Beatles and Bruno Mars to the hits of Queen and Motown, you’ll be hard pressed to keep your toes from tapping!
The group was originally formed by a group of alumni of the University of Texas Longhorn Singers, the university’s official show choir, back in 1984. Over the years, the group has performed at the Paramount Theatre, Zilker Hillside Theatre, Texas School for the Deaf, The State Theatre and many more! Show themes have ranged from Pops on Broadway, Awesome 80’s, and Hits by Gershwin, Porter, and Berlin, to Animania (animal themed songs) and Cabaresque.
Their May 1993 show program summed up the group members well:
“It may be hard to believe, but most River City Pops performers actually maintain a convincing facade of normalcy during their daily lives. Many are parents to newborns, adult children, and everything in between. They love and/or hate their jobs as shyster lawyers, government or education bureaucrats, overworked teachers or healthcare professionals, slick talking sales and customer service reps and a myriad of others. They all stand together in their dedication to performing quality pop music and their common bonds of love and friendship as they share the demanding preparation and exhilarating performances.”
With rehearsals in full swing and excitement in the air, the River City Pops are primed for a performance to bring down the house. Break out your old boombox, because we’ve got a hot new mix for you. Push play and we’ll catch on the flip side.
River City Pops will debut Mixtape Friday May 29th at 8:00 pm and run for nine performances through June 7th. Get your tickets before they’re gone!
