It’s the most wonderful time of the year! And the perfect time for a new family tradition! Of Mice and Music: A Jazz Nutcracker is a unique twist on the holiday classic that the whole family will fall in love with! Tapestry Dance co-founder Acia Gray takes over our blog to reflect on the process of creating such a unique holiday show.
When I started the idea of presenting an Annual Holiday show, my first instinct was to take our national treasured Nutcracker and play with a live jazz band, my wonderful professional tap dance company, our Adult Academy Company Visions In Motion, our Pre-Apprentice Company Visions in Rhythm as well as some of our wonderful academy students! To critical acclaim our annual presentation of Of Mice & Music – A Jazz Nutcracker has taken off as “a holiday event not to be missed” by The Austin Chronicle!
The production is a unique rendition of the traditional story and yet successfully creates a non-stop rhythmic explosion taking the audience on a fun-filled, “Austintatious” journey with Rhythm Rats, cute mice, incredible tap soloists from around the country, a Tacky Christmas Sweater dance and my rendition of Drosselmeir as Madame Bon Marche (Clara’s eccentric Aunt) all incased in the incredible music of some of Austin’s best jazz musicians! Not only does this fulfill the appetite for our holiday tradition, but it all happens in a single act over the course of only an hour!
If you’re a fan of “Keeping Austin Weird” this is a proud representation and you’ll be coming back year after year!!
Masumi Jones (Austin’s “best drummer” 2014) leads the live music performed by an incredible jazz ensemble. This one-of-a-kind performance incorporates both the Tapestry Dance Company and Academy, including the professional company, as well as the pre-professional company Visions In Rhythm, TDC’s Amateur Adult Company Visions In Motion, and members of the incomparable children’s academy.
